I think happy endings, no matter how unrealistic, give us hope; maybe something that magical could happen to me! Tragic endings are usually more powerful, though. But when the story is unresolved with a cliffhanger - I hate that. It's like taking the easy way out and not telling the full story. It reminds me too much of how real life continues on. That determines how I want it to end. Of course, I idealize a happy ending, but I also don't want to be condescended to. I want it to be realistic. With things like chick flicks, I'm generally set for a mindless ride of enjoyment, so the ending is not important.
